Shared Reading
1.     On your observational checklist (PDF) note the Essential Components that are addressed during the first part of the shared reading activity. How does this activity engage students who are a different level of literacy development?
During Ms. Perez’s share reading she does a read aloud in where she helps students really think about what they are reading. This activity helps students with comprehension and vocabulary in case there are words students cannot read or understand. It is a good skill to have especially when it comes to reading and comprehension for beginners.
2.     During her explicit phonics lesson, how does Ms. Perez support students’ problem-solving skills?
During Ms. Perez’s explicit phonics lesson thought her students how to sound out words and practiced putting sounds together in order to sound out a word. This activity demonstrated students how to try and sound out different letters when they are stuck on a word.
3.     Based on what you saw in the video, what are the different ways that shared reading can be used to promote literacy?
The different ways that shared reading can be used to promote literacy is by partnership or group shared reading. It is important for students to do their independent reading and then share what they have read to one another.
Guided Reading
1.      Why does she think it’s important for students to verbalize their strategies? What else do you notice about how she helps students build meaning in text?
Ms. Perez believes it is important for students to verbalized their strategies so that they can internalize them in order for students to communicate their strategies with one another.  I noticed Ms. Perez used picture evidence so that students may predict what the words are.
Differentiated Instruction
1.     How does Ms. Perez organize her classroom to support a wide range of learners?
Ms. Perez has organized her room in ways to support all of her learners by including differentiation within her centers and instruction to reinforce her students who need help. She uses visual based activity to help them sort out rhyming words.
2.      How are reading and writing connected in classroom activities?
Reading and writing is connected in different ways in Ms. Perez’s class, one way is after students read their books they were asked to take notes and given the opportunity to create either a poster or a booklet. Ms. Perez also had students crate a writing activity that was rhyme based after reading the poem.
Assessment
1.     How does Ms. Perez use ongoing individual assessment to guide her instruction? How can the class profile be used to help group students and differentiate instruction?
Ms. Perez actually gets to know her students and really gets to know what type of readers and writers they are by assessing them at the beginning of the school year and well as in the middle of the school year. The class profile help by classifying students together.
2.     How can an ongoing assessment be integrated into your own classroom practice?
Ongoing assessments can really help teachers stay aware of their student’s progress, whether or not the students is improving and at what pace the student is improving.
